The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard, conducted a mission to commemorate America’s fallen servicemen and women at two national cemeteries. The ceremonial task, called “Flags In,” involved placing American flags at each gravesite and columbarium in preparation for Memorial Day. This operation was a means to pay respect to the nation’s deceased veterans. By participating in this tradition, the Old Guard members personally contributed to the public recognition of fallen soldiers’ sacrifices.
The cemeteries benefiting from this pre-Memorial Day initiative were Arlington National Cemetery and the United States Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery. This commemoration, however, is not discussed further in the report. However, it appears this operation intends to uphold the tradition of honoring the country’s heroes and serving as a reminder of the human cost of war.
