The Office of Head Start (OHS) plays a crucial role in supporting Tribal Head Start initiatives within indigenous communities. In FY 2024, OHS allocated $345 million to these programs, enabling them to integrate Native languages and cultures into their curriculum. This support includes training on incorporating Native traditions, which was provided to 141 Tribal Head Start programs. GAO’s interview with 10 selected Tribal Head Start programs revealed their utilization of various methods, including immersion and dual language classrooms, to teach Native languages, as permitted by Head Start Program Performance Standards.
Furthermore, OHS offers flexibility, training, and assistance to Tribal Head Start programs to address enrollment concerns. However, while officials from these programs appreciated OHS support, they also brought up communication issues related to timeliness, which have affected their operations.
